High performance grease to improve the operation of a new car.!!Look at the wheel bearings. | News

There’s no such thing as a “new car, no maintenance” guarantee anywhere. It’s important to practice maintenance on a new car.And it often has a big influence on the condition of the machine later on. The condition of the machine can be further improved by using high performance chemicals and oils for maintenance. The KLX125 that we entered in the enduro race has been running well for the past few months, regardless of the rain and muddy environment. Although it is a relatively old model, you can see how important it is to maintain the bike right after riding it at ……. Here.Importance of grease sealing in wheel bearingsLet’s get to know again the

Regardless of the maintenance of wheel bearings, let’s try to do various maintenance that can’t be done without removing the wheels on occasions such as when changing tires or removing the front and rear wheels.

Use of high performance grease to enhance conditions

Frictional heat causes the Super Zoil component added to the high performance grease to form a metallic compound with excellent wear resistance, enabling Super Zoil grease to maintain lubrication performance even under frictional pressures of up to one ton. Superzoil grease can be used at high temperatures of -35°C to 130°C, and is ranked as a high quality grease in terms of wet performance with less oxidation and deterioration. It can be expected to maintain stable performance over the long term.

The steel side collars can wear out.

The condition of the dust seal that the axle shaft passes through is important. It is not good if there is mud inside the lip. When we looked at the front wheel, the dust seal was in this condition. Obviously, lack of lubrication = lack of rust prevention. He said that he had been riding on the dirt road many times between the last maintenance and this work. We also have to check the condition of the side collar which sticks to the dust seal. If there is a piece of rubber on the outer side of the collar where the dust seal lip touches, it is a sign of poor lubrication.

I like to keep snap ring pliers on hand.

When the side collar is inserted into the dust seal after the dirt is removed, it turns smoothly without the feeling of contact, or when it does not touch the seal lip and there is a rattle, it is definitely the time to replace the dust seal. This dust seal is easy to be bad. If you have a lot of off-road riding on dirt road, you should grease up the dust seal regularly and keep the dust seal for replacement. The circlip on the inside of the seal was starting to rust. After riding in the rain or dirt, the wheel should be removed and the dust seal should be cleaned and greased.

Grease up is possible without removing the bearing.

If it is a rubber type seal bearing, only the seal can be removed smoothly by using a flat-tipped, thin pick-up tool or the tip of a precision screwdriver. Let’s inspect it when you remove the wheel. This time, using a precision screwdriver, insert the screwdriver into the gap between the inner ring seal lips, and by using the inner ring as a fulcrum for leverage, the seal could be easily removed. This seal can be reused, so be careful not to bend it.

Bearing life is determined by grease

https://wrenchset.top/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/20231209082400-65742420d9e77.jpghttps://wrenchset.top/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/20231209082400-65742420d9e77.jpg

With the seal lips removed, the stock bearings had only a very small amount of grease on them. More grease is not always better, and for a racing machine that is always maintained, this may be enough. However, if it is a production road bike and it is an off-road bike, it should be greased more thoroughly. I removed the old grease with a cotton swab.

Practice grease application and rubbing

I attached the supplied tapered nozzle to the Superzoil grease, cut the tip with nippers, and started sealing the grease. The grease was applied while pressing the nozzle down so that the grease would enter the gap between the steel balls. Once the entire surface was covered with grease, the inner ring was rotated while pressing down further with the fingertips to spread the grease. Not only apply the grease to the top surface, but also try to push the grease into the inner ring as much as possible. Repeating this process 2 or 3 times will allow the grease to spread to the inside of the bearing. It would be a disaster if you have a wheel bearing problem on the road.

Restore bearing seals

Once you are sure that the grease has been spread, you can restore the side seal that was removed from the bearing. This seal has an aluminum base with a rubber lip baked on. If it is deformed, correct the shape before restoring. Wheel bearings can last a long time depending on maintenance.

Disassembly “on the side” maintenance is important

When you remove the front and rear wheels, be sure to wipe the axle shafts with a rag (if they are very dirty, use a parts cleaning solution) and apply grease to the shaft core. This will prevent galling and increase rust prevention. Check the levers, which are easier to maintain than the wheel bearings. In particular, grease up both the shaft and the sliding parts of the lever pivot, as a lack of grease will worsen the feel of the operation. Dust and rainwater can easily get into the adjusting bolt that adjusts the clutch lever play, and if dirt gets caught in it, it becomes difficult to adjust. Regular greasing is essential, but do not apply too much grease as it will attract dirt and debris.!!

After the work is completed, cut the wheel to the ground (float it) and let it spin. If the wheel turns smoothly, it is good, but if you feel that it does not turn smoothly, remove the brake caliper and check if the wheel turns smoothly by itself. If the wheel still does not turn smoothly, a hard tap on the head of the axle shaft with a plastic hammer may improve the alignment of the bearings and collars and make the wheel turn smoothly.

POINT.

  • Point 1・ After off-road driving or driving in the rain, remove the front and rear wheels and check the dust seal of the hub while washing the car.
  • Point 2・ By greasing the wheel bearings regularly, the life of the bearings will definitely be increased.
  • Point 3. Grease not only the wheels, but also the lever pivots, sliding surfaces, suspension link shafts and bushings on a regular basis!

Even if you’ve heard the term “greasing” before, there are probably very few beginner riders who have actually experienced or practiced it. It’s not limited to beginners, but it’s probably the same for experienced riders as well. Almost all of the sliding parts of the vehicle can be called greasing points, but which parts have you greased before??Changing the engine oil is extremely important, but in terms of maintaining the condition of the bike over the years, greasing the bodywork is just as important as changing the oil.

Here, we will be greasing the hub bearings (wheel bearings) of the front and rear wheels. The reason why we decided to “grease the wheel bearings” this time was because the machine owner told us that he had entered several forest road touring and enduro races in the rain. From the outside, it seemed that the hub bearings and axle shaft area had not been greased.

I immediately lifted the front and rear wheels on the maintenance stand and removed the wheels. Then, the wheel side collar was spotted against the dust seal. There was almost no resistance to the dust seal lip. When we checked the inside of the dust seal, we found that the bearing retaining circlip was rusted and the dust seal was clogged with dried mud. In conclusion, it seems that the dust seal was worn out and could not play a role of a dust seal, and the sludge had entered inside the seal. At the time of this maintenance practice, there was no replacement dust seal at hand, so I restored it by applying more grease. It is obvious that the front and rear dust seals need to be replaced. I told the owner that I will change the drive chain soon, so I advised him to change the front and rear dust seals at that time.

Here, let’s grease up the hub bearings. The bearings inside the engine are always lubricated with engine oil, but unless the bearings around the chassis are actively greased, problems such as noise, rattle, or even seizure can occur. These are not parts that should be replaced just because a problem occurs in the first place (seizure problems often make it nearly impossible to drive or even move the vehicle), so it is important to perform maintenance in advance (on a regular basis).

With regular greasing, the bearings can actually last for a long time, even semi-permanently. Sealed bearings are often used in these hub bearings, and if the sealed part is made of rubber rather than steel, it is possible to clean and grease up the bearings while they are still in the hub. It is advisable to use high performance grease and maintain the bearings on a regular basis.
